AUNTIES IN PHILANTHROPY

Recognizing the significant underfunding of Indigenous Women-led initiatives, IFIP established Aunties in Philanthropy to strengthen connections and nurture relationships that bridge Indigenous communities globally. In many Indigenous cultures, "Aunties" serve as pillars of support and wisdom. The inaugural Aunties in Philanthropy Gathering in May 2022 marked the start of a movement toward equity, understanding, and collective action to empower Indigenous Women in the philanthropic landscape.

Why It Matters

The Aunties in Philanthropy platform holds profound significance for Indigenous women worldwide, serving as a beacon of empowerment, solidarity, and cultural preservation. Indigenous women possess rich knowledge across diverse fields such as traditional medicine, nature, and cultural rites and rituals, among other significant expressions. However, despite the vital importance of this knowledge for future generations and the world at large, protecting it has been challenging due to the marginalization of Indigenous communities and the exploitation of Indigenous resources.

The Aunties in Philanthropy working group addresses these challenges by providing a much-needed sacred space for Indigenous women's voices to be heard, allowing them to pass on their wisdom and kinship traditions. This platform nurtures a sense of belonging and connection among Indigenous women, cultivating mutual support, collaboration, and resilience. By empowering Indigenous women to reclaim their narratives, uphold their rights, and shape a more just and inclusive philanthropic landscape, Aunties in Philanthropy contributes to the preservation and celebration of Indigenous wisdom and heritage.

Our Work

IFIP's commitment to amplifying Indigenous voices and facilitating collaboration was demonstrated through the Aunties in Philanthropy Gathering held in May 2022, the first global event organized by and for Indigenous women in philanthropy. This groundbreaking gathering provided a platform for sharing Indigenous healing models, emphasizing solidarity and connectivity, while championing self-care and intergenerational healing. The event embodied inclusivity and nurtured bonds that bridge Indigenous communities worldwide.

Through cultivating relationships and fortifying connections, the gathering recognized the stark underfunding of Indigenous Women-led initiatives, setting the stage for ongoing collaboration, shared gatherings, and mentorship programs between various Indigenous-led philanthropic initiatives. This event not only showcased the importance of kinship and respect in Indigenous cultures but also signaled a movement toward equity, understanding, and shared action in the philanthropic landscape.
